What To Do Before, During and After Water Damage

9/16/2022 (Permalink)

We cannot control Mother Nature; when she hits Philadelphia, we need to make sure we are ready to go for whatever damage she leaves behind. We can’t control the weather but we can control what we do to prepare for the before, during and after water damage.

Here are the things you should do before, during and after water damage to make the remediation process easy for you.

BEFORE:

  • Make a list of all the things you own; furniture, clothing, valuables
  • Fill out a Family Emergency Plan, or if you are a business owner/property owner - fill out our Emergency Ready Plan
  • Have a To-Go Bag that you can grab if you are rushing out in a hurry
  • Be aware of what your insurance company covers when damage unexpectedly hits your home or business

DURING:

  • Turn off water valves and electricity circuits
  • Call you insurance company to file a claim
  • Stay away from any flood water whether it’s from a storm or a leaking pipe. You’re unfamiliar with where the water came from.
  • Call your local SERVPRO, give them the insurance claim number. After communicating with the insurance company, our crews will be dispatched out to your home to assess the situation and discuss next steps.

AFTER:

  • Depending on the damage will determine what happens after the damage is assessed by our professionals. We take pride in making sure the water damage remediation process is as smooth as possible for our customers.

Flooding is the most common U.S. natural disaster, and Pennsylvania has the highest flooding rate of any state.

If your home or business is suffering from water damage, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale now at 215-545-5300.

Here are a few immediate steps you can take to help speed up the process:

  4. Shut off the water source so no further damage is created.
  5. Turn off circuit breakers.
  6. Don’t enter affected areas!

Use technology such as alarms and/or smart home monitoring systems that can be managed and monitored even when you aren’t home!

4 Tips to Find Leaks In Your Home

8/18/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know that the average household leak can account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water waste every year, and ten percent of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more a day? MIND BLOWN!

Consider these 4 tips for finding household leaks, according to the Environmental Protection Agency:

1. Have you taken a look at your water bill recently? If not, it’s time to see how much water you and your family are using per month. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons, there is aserious leaksomewhere.

2. Check your water meter first, then one or two hours later after not using any water. If the number has moved then you have a leak somewhere.

3. Dye test in your toilet! Drop food coloring into your toilet tank and if any color shows up in the bowl, you have a leak. Immediately flush to avoid staining the tank.

4. Call the water restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale to help!

Our team recently got a call of a water leak from the top floor to the lower level. Once our crew got in there, they quickly realized the caulking around the shower was deteriorating, which caused water to leak onto the floor when used.

If you are experiencing leaking in your home or property, call us today for an estimate!

Electrical Fire at Jim's Steaks in Philadelphia, PA

Fire Department respond to fire at Jim's Steaks Fire Department responds to multi-alarm fire at Jim's Steaks on South St.

If you are a true Philadelphian, you know cheesesteaks are a staple in our city and they need to be protected at all times! So when the famously known Jim’s Steaks on South St. went up in flames last Friday morning - the city was in a panic. Our team was quickly on the scene to assess the situation along with 125 first responders.

According to Action News, the fire is believed to have started in the electrical system. Employee Christina Lawlor knew something was up when she opened for the day and realized how hot it was inside.

When the owner, Ken Silver, entered the building two days later, he feared the damage was a lot worse than it actually was. According to the fire department, the blaze was difficult to put out because the flames were moving rapidly through the HVAC system.

Silver credited the fire department, who remained on the scene for 10 hours. After city officials searched the century old building, it was determined that the building is structurally sound, bumping up the timeline of rebuilding.

The cheesesteak staff is determined to start rebuilding as soon as they are allowed to by city officials. He is anticipating reopening by Memorial Day 2023.

Jim’s Steaks celebrated their 46th year anniversary in the beginning of July and while this will set them back a year, the city is rallying behind the famous cheesesteak joint.

Time to Check Your Smoke Alarms

7/20/2022 (Permalink)

Emergencies are going to happen; that’s life. Having a plan in place is super important, especially when owning a house or business. Checking your fire alarms frequently is important to preparation. Here are some things to keep in mind when it comes to your fire alarms:

BATTERY LIFE

SAFETY: The placement of smoke alarms is very important. Placing them in all sleeping areas and outside bedrooms/outside of doors.
FEATURES: The NFPA suggests checking your alarm systems every month by pushing the “test” button and making sure the sound works.
BRANDS: The evolution of technology has changed our world in so many ways & smoke alarms are no exception. Google has their own brand of smoke alarms and it is listed as the most popular and reliable smoke alarm.

Have you checked your smoke alarms lately? If you’re thinking to yourself, “when was the last time we checked our smoke alarms?” then it’s time to do it!

Different Types of Fire Smoke

7/11/2022 (Permalink)

Did you know there are different types of fire smoke, which in return, decides how you clean the damage?

There are a lot of factorsto take into considerations whendeciding on how to approach fire damage with soap and a brush.

Here are the types of smoke that can occur in any property:

  • WET SMOKE: slow burning, low temp fire, most troublesome to clean, turns into foam of thick and sticky residue that latches to surfaces
  • DRY SMOKE: high temp blaze, comes in a fine powder-like form. since its a fine form, it can be easily cleaned, all-purpose spray
  • PROTEIN SMOKE: when food is burned, generally light in color & appearance unless comes in contact with painted surfaces or wood - becomes permanent discoloration
  • PETROLEUM SMOKE: when oils are burned, very dark in color and can stain any surface or material, cleaned with agent designed to cut grease

Overheating Laptop

7/11/2022 (Permalink)

Now that everyone is living the ‘working from home’ life, our devices are constantly running.

Here are some reasons why your laptop overheats:

  1. The laptop is placed in a place where temperatures are high
  2. The laptops’ air exhaust vents are blocked, preventing air flow & resulting in overheating
  3. Software or a service could be consuming a lot of processing power
  4. Dust could be clogged in the internal components, preventing clean airflow

Recently a couch became the victim of an overheated laptop. SERVPRO ofFox Chase/Torresdaleresponded to the aftermath of the couch blaze plus the fire being extinguished from the fire department.

According to our project manager, Eric, the fire itself was more or less contained to the couch. The vast majority of the damage to the unit is from the result of smoke and water from the fire department. The structure and contents within the unit were found to be non-salvageable.

Our team cleaned out all contents and removed all structural materials down to the framing. The next phase will be for our reconstruction team to step in to see if there needs to be any rebuild for the apartment unit.

Life Cycle of Mold

7/11/2022 (Permalink)

LIFE CYCLE OF MOLD

SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale, dressed in head to toe Tyvek suits, responded to a call of a vacant house saturated in mold. The vacant home suffered a leaking pipe in the bathroom causing moisture to build up. Because the home was vacant for two months, the mold grew throughout the entire house.

Here are 5 common places in your house where mold grows.

    1. ATTIC: mold grows from the accumulation of moisture condensation in the gap between your warm house and the cold weather outside. Getting the proper insulation will reduce the amount of condensation.
    2. HVAC & AIR DUCTS:  A warm location with high water vapor content is particularly prone to mold buildup within the ducts.
    3. INSIDE WALLS
    4. BATHROOM
    5. CRAWL SPACE

SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale found out quickly that this mold grew in ALL 5 of these places and then some. Our mitigation team came in and tore down the walls to the studs. The insurance company needed to inspect the house prior to reconstruction to decide what our next steps would be in the rebuilding process.

If you suspect there is mold in your house, talking to a SERVPRO professional is the most effective course of action. Based on moisture levels in the affected area, our professionals will be able to tell you if a simple cleaning would work or if you need immediate remediation. Call us today for a quote!

Frequently Asked Questions About Mold

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

Sensing mold or mildew in your home or business can be an unsettling discovery. The first question that comes to mind is, “what now?” We have answered some of the most frequently asked questions about mold and mildew.

  1. How soon after water damage does mold form?
    • It is important to act quickly after water damage occurs in your home or business. Mold can start growing between 24-48 hours after damage or until the access to water has been removed.
  2. How does mold spread in the house?
    • Mold spreads by releasing it’s spores into the air. These spores can spread by fans, HVAC systems, or people or pets that come in contact with the spores. It’s important to keep the mold contained until professionals arrive and assess the situation.
  3. Can you clean up mold yourself?
    • It is highly recommended not to try cleaning mold by yourself. However, you can search for the water source and turn it off as soon as it’s found, but try not to disturb the mold by doing so. It is also recommended to turn off HVAC systems until professionals can inspect and diagnose the mold issue.
  4. Can you stay in your house during mold remediation?
    • Depending on the severity of the mold in your home, it is sometimes possible to remain in the home during remediation. One of the first things SERVPRO does before beginning remediation work is to contain the affected area so that it is isolated and to limit cross-contamination in areas not affected.

Outdoor Firepit Regulations

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

There’s something relaxing about sitting by a fire pit on a cool summer night roasting s’mores. Summer is upon us, which for Philadelphia that means - blazing hot days with cooler nights.

If you are thinking about purchasing a fire pit, please adhere to these guidelines by the Department of Licenses and Inspections:

  1. Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be completely enclosed, which includes solid material or heavy-duty screening or both) to prevent large embers that may cause a fire from escaping into the atmosphere.
  2. The appropriate type of fuel, such as a non-pressure treated wood, charcoal or fireplace logs, must be used for portable outdoor fireplaces that burn combustible materials. Propane units will only be used with propane.
  3. Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be at least 15 feet from a structure, including decks and balconies. To prevent fire pit tipping over, it needs to be on stable and reasonably leveled ground.
  4. Please do not leave fire pits unattended until the fire is completely extinguished.

Along with the four guidelines above, please make sure you read your fireplace or fire pit manual to ensure guidelines are being followed. We have a customer care center available 24/7 if any emergencies arise. Just call us at 215-545-5300.

Keeping Pets Safe From a House Fire

Keeping Pets Safe In The Event of A House Fire

Pet lovers in Lexington Park, PA are like pet lovers everywhere: they consider their furry, feathered, or scaly friends beloved members of the family. In the event of a fire emergency in the home, it is important to have an evacuation plan for pets just like the rest of the family and make sure everyone is aware of it. The fire department, your insurance company, and restoration experts will take care of the rest.

Proactive Measures

Having either hardwired or battery-powered smoke alarms on every level of your home is a must to keep everyone safe. Check them regularly to make sure they are operational. In the event of a fire emergency, it is important to have a few other items and established procedures in place for pet preparation.

  • Practice your evacuation plan with your family, including your pets. For pet safety, train them to come when called, and for those in enclosures, designate an appropriate rescuer.
  • In the family emergency kit, include what your pet might need. First aid supplies, any medications, and nonperishable foods should be packed.
  • Learn basic first aid procedures for the type of pet you own.
  • Affix a pet alert to a window or door to alert fire fighters to the number and type of pets in the home and where they are kept. If you are unable to evacuate them, professionals can perform the rescue.
  • Have a plan in place for housing your pet if you become displaced from your home.
  • Keep pet ownership records and proof of vaccinations in a fire box.

Proper planning can reduce the kind of chaos that can lead to avoidable losses in the unfortunate situation of a fire emergency in the home. Practicing evacuation procedures and assembling an emergency kit can help keep all members of your family out of harm’s way.

Keeping Mold From Being an Unwelcome Guest at Your Restaurant

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

Food in containers inside a refrigerator Store food properly.

If you work in the food service industry, you may be quite familiar with how uncomfortable working in a too-hot kitchen in Philadelphia, PA, can be. But while your physical discomfort may be bothersome, the food that you’re preparing can potentially suffer far worse. Kitchens play host to an abundance of warm, moist air as it is, and when that hot air merges with an occasional blast of cool air coming into the kitchen from an air-conditioned dining area or a back door, the condensation that ultimately forms can quickly lead to mold growth on your food.

Keeping Food Mold-Free

Mold growth can occur quickly under the right conditions. Taking these steps can help prevent mold from contaminating the food in your work kitchen:

1. Properly launder all kitchen towels, sponges, and dishcloths on a regular basis. Keeping these items dry and well ventilated prior to laundering will help prevent mold and mildew from forming.

2. Take special care to clean wood cooking tools. Wooden kitchen tools in particular are at high risk for developing mold. Make sure that these tools are properly washed and thoroughly dried, preferably in a spot where there is plenty of air circulation (and light, if possible).

3. Keep your refrigerator clean. Cleaning the place where the food will be stored will help cut down on the risk of mold. A solution of one to two tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in a quart of warm water is an effective cleaner for the fridge.

4. Carefully inspect any food you buy. Fresh produce should be examined closely for any bruising, pits, or dents, which will indicate damage during shipping and/or potential rotting on the inside. Choose firm, evenly colored produce with a relatively smooth surface and a fresh smell. Similarly, check fresh meats, poultry and jarred food items for any signs of mold.

5. Store food properly. Protect your food from any airborne mold spores by keeping it tightly covered with plastic wrap. Cover and refrigerate perishable foods and ensure that they do not sit out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Consume leftovers within 3-4 days.

Utilizing a Proper Ventilation System for Mold Prevention

When managing an area with high humidity such as a restaurant kitchen or bakery, it is imperative to have an adequate ventilation system to keep air cool and circulating. Since experts recommend keeping the relative humidity level to below 40 percent, more than one HVAC unit in a commercial kitchen – one in the front and one in the back – is a wise choice. Also, be sure to maintain all gaskets and vents, keeping them clean and free of any dust or debris. Taking this approach, in addition to employing efficient exhaust hoods and fans, help prevent food spoilage as well as overheated conditions for kitchen workers. If water damage has already occurred in the walls or ceiling, you may want to enlist the help of a specialist to remove any resulting mold.

Keeping your kitchen in Philadelphia, PA, free of mold growth is a continual process, but following these tips will help ensure that your workspace remains as clean and effective as possible.

How To Find a Good Air Purifier for Your Home

7/18/2021 (Permalink)

Closeup view on air filter. Filtration concept. HEPA filters are rated to remove 99.9% of particles .03 microns in size from the air that passes through.

Tips For Picking The Best Purifier For Your House

Mold spreads via spores in the air. Air filtration can thus help you limit the amount of mold in your Rhawnhurst, PA, home.
You can filter your house with an air purifier. Of course, not all purifiers are the same.

1. Look for a HEPA Filter
A high-efficiency particulate air filter is the gold standard. It removes early 100 percent of particles down to 0.3 micrometers in size. You need a filter that will remove both large and small particles since mold spores are quite tiny. Other types of purification systems, including HVAC filters, may not remove these particles.

2. Calculate the Air Flow
You can measure the airflow of an air filtration system by calculating the Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR. This tells you how much mold-free air is coming out of the machine. The higher the CADR, the more clean air you will have.
To figure out the ideal CADR for a particular room in your house, first, figure out how big the space is in cubic feet. Multiply that by the number of air changes you want in the room per hour (ideally four or five). Then divide this product by 60 since CADR is measured in cubic feet per minute.

3. Check the Noise Levels
Once you have located the purifiers with HEPA filters and a good CADR, it is time to make your final choice. Choose a system that is easy to use and relatively quiet.
Keep in mind that while the above purifiers work well, they may not be completely effective following a major water damage in your home. Even if you have a purifier, you should still call mold cleanup experts to ensure the flood or leak does not lead to a severe infestation.
Air filtration can help remove mold spores from your home. This should keep your environment clean and keep the structure of your house intact.

How To Recover From Water Damage

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Bursting pipe A burst pipe can cause major damage to your home in Philadelphia, PA.

While the prospect of a water leak in your home might be terrifying, the recovery process is not as hard or lengthy as you might think. There are a few things you should do immediately after you’ve had bursting pipes in your home to make cleanup easier:

  1. Disconnect the power and remove any electronics from the area.
  2. Remove as much standing water as possible using buckets and towels.
  3. Dry the affected area thoroughly; open windows and turn on fans for the best air circulation.
  4. Place any wet objects and furniture to dry in a room with good air flow, out of the sun.
  5. Contact a restoration specialist to assess the extent of the damage as soon as possible.

The Speed of Recovery

Recovery from water damage usually takes three to five days, although it may take between seven and 10 days if you have wood floors. Any broken items should be removed and discarded safely, whereas any salvageable items should be hung to dry indoors so they won’t be affected by sunlight. Items such as books or clothes should only be put away again once they are truly dry to avoid any mold growth.

As for recovery of the house itself, the time required will depend on the extent of the damage. While It may not take long to fix a broken pipe, drywall, floors, carpet and other surfaces need thorough drying and disinfection to prevent further issues.

The Dangers of Water Damage

If your home was subject to damage from a natural disaster or bursting pipes, it may be at risk for a number of potentially dangerous consequences:

  • Contaminated water
  • Mold infestation
  • Structural damage
  • Property damage

To avoid these issues, follow the steps above and find a specialist in Philadelphia, PA, who can help you assess your home for any unseen issues. Bursting pipes can’t always be prevented, but a restoration specialist will help you feel secure in your home knowing that you’re protected against greater risks.

Exterior Inspection Tips for Your Commercial Property

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Building Inspector completing an inspection form on clipboard Perform regular inspections of your building to avoid any damage to your property.

What To Look For During Your Inspection

Owning a commercial property is a big responsibility. You must be vigilant to make sure that your building in Pennypack, PA, is a safe place for occupants to enter. Making a building inspection a regular part of your exterior maintenance plan is a good way to ensure that this happens. Here are some tips on what to look for during your inspection.

Walls

To keep your building maintained properly, you must pay attention to the exterior walls. Look for signs of damage. Even regular wear and tear can become a problem over time, making it necessary to hire restoration specialists to repair your building. Pay particular attention to the following issues:

  • Water and air infiltration points
  • Paint inconsistencies
  • Holes or weak spots, particularly where different parts of the wall connect

All problems with your walls can't easily be seen with the naked eye, so it's important to test the wall for issues, especially when it comes to areas where air or water could enter.

Cladding

Cladding is the coating on the structure that provides insulation and resistance to outdoor elements. It also makes the building look nicer. Your exterior maintenance plan should include an inspection of the cladding to make sure there are no chips, dents or holes in it. If left unchecked, these problems that may seem minor at first can lead to bigger issues, because they leave your building unprotected.

Windows

Inspecting your windows and initiating necessary repairs is a great way to save on energy costs. It is also important, however, for protecting the building from water that might seep into weak weather stripping or a broken seal. Make sure your windows have proper insulation so that air and water stay out of your building.

When a storm rages and your building is not able to withstand it, the breakdown can often be traced back to something missed because exterior maintenance was neglected. Regular building inspections can help you identify and resolve problems before extreme weather strikes.

Holiday Season

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

After effects of a residential fire

This time of year, everyone is gearing up for the holidays.  While we will all surely be eating turkey on Thanksgiving day, we may be preparing it differently.

In the last few years, deep frying turkeys has become a wildly popular method to cook the food.  However, according to a "Home Fire Involving Cooking Equipment" report, home fires caused by cooking are nearly 4 times as likely on Thanksgiving as any other day of the year.  Deep frying turkeys, while delicious, is also very dangerous.  So before you get into some deep frying fun, here are 3 quick safety tips for you to protect your home:

1) Stay Away from The House – Set up the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away. Never leave it unattended.

2) Use a Thawed and Dry Turkey – Make sure your Thanksgiving turkey is completely thawed and dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over. If oil spills from the fryer onto the burner, it can cause a fire.

3) Be Prepared – Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites.

From all of us here at SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale, we want to wish you and your family a Happy (and safe) Thanksgiving!

An overhead of the pentagon

Following the events of September 11, 2001, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals were called in to assist with cleanup and restoration of the Pentagon.  As everyone can remember, it was a difficult, emotional, and uneasy time to travel, or simply go to work.  In spite of the emotions and difficulties involved in the restoration effort, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals dried nearly 300,000 square feet in addition to providing fire, soot and smoke cleanup and restoration services. Upon compeltion of the drying assignment, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals provided mold remediation services in other sections of the facility.  Despite the size of the project, the emotional sensitivity of those involved at the time, and other unique aspects of the project, SERVPRO Frachise Professionals met the challenge and completed the project in just 90 days.

A flooded basement leaves contents floating in the water

You never expect it when a water damage wreaks havoc on your home.  The water damage clean up can be a headache so you always want to be prepared.  Here are 5 tips to help you recover quickly when a water damages your property.  1. Find the source of the water damage.  It's easy to find a faucet left running or sewer backup.  However, if water is coming from a hidden pipe in the walls you need to shut off water to the house as quickly as possible.  2. After the panic has settled down, assess the level of damage to your home.  There are some steps you can take to remove the water from your house, but if carpeting, drywall, rugs or other structural damage has occurred, call a professional water restoration company like SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale immediately.  3. Move Quickly!  You need to start mitigating the damage before more damage piles up.  Bacteria and hazardous mold spores can begin to grow within hours of the catastrophe.  4.  Use a shop-vac to remove as much water as possible until the professionals show up.  The longer the water sits on the floor, the more damage it will create.  Move quickly to remove as much water as possible.  5. Take photos for your insurance claim.  Your insurance company will probably send out someone to investigate the damage, but if you have pictures that show everything as it happened, it could smooth out the claims process.  Of course, the best kind of water damage is the one that never happens, but if you do ever find yourself in need, the professionals at SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale are here to help you 24/7.

Thanksgiving Holiday

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

It is a little difficult to tell from the photo, but there once was a deep fryer in this home. Unfortunately, it caused extensive fire damage.

Mold - Don't let it grow!

9/21/2017 (Permalink)

After a significant, prolonged water intrusion, water wicked up the drywall and mold began to colonize and spread. We were there to help remediate.

There are many misconceptions out there about mold, so we here at SERVPRO would like to help with some facts.

Fungi and mold occur naturally in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.  Some molds can actually produce useful things.  The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold.  The lifesaving drug, penicillin, is a product of mold!

That said, some forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

Intrusion of water into your home of place of business can result in mold growth.  Water intrusions can be caused by storm damage, plumbing, equipment failures, and poor humidity control.  When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.  Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments.  If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply.  To avoid this and the possibility of adverse health affects, call SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale today!

Holiday Weekend

8/28/2017 (Permalink)

After leaving a property vacant for a few days, the property owner returned to find this unfortunate mess.

With the holiday weekend upon us, many people will be heading to the beach for one last summer weekend!  However, if a water damage were to occur while the house is unoccupied, you could be coming home to a disaster!

As a tip, you should consider shutting off the main valve that controls all the water for your home in order to protect against catastrophic water damage. Everyone in your home should know where the main water shutoff valve is located so they can stop the water in an emergency. And you should turn it off whenever you leave home, even overnight.

If you forget to shut off the main water valve, and you do walk into a water damage, here are just a few tips of what to do:

  • Shut off the source of water if possible
  • Turn off circuit breakers for areas of the building if possible
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping or extracting

We hope everyone enjoys the unofficial "end of the summer" holiday weekend!  Should you or someone you know need help with a water damage, SERVPRO of Fox Chase/Torresdale professionals will be available to help 24/7!
